Local, The Netherlands, | By Correspondent June 17, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The unique landscapes and ecosystems of the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom of the Netherlands will take center stage in a new documentary series by Dutch broadcaster BNNVARA.

The six-part series, titled Natuur in de Cariben (Nature in the Caribbean), follows presenter Natasja Gibbs as she travels across Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St. Eustatius, and St. Maarten, exploring the region's rich biodiversity and the environmental challenges facing the islands.

According to BNNVARA, the series showcases the remarkable variety of ecosystems found throughout the Caribbean Kingdom, ranging from cloud forests on the higher islands to coral reefs and coastal habitats in the southern Caribbean.

Climate Change on the Front Line

Beyond highlighting the natural beauty of the islands, the documentary also focuses on the growing impact of climate change.

The series examines how rising sea levels, coral bleaching, changing weather patterns, and environmental degradation are affecting both nature and local communities.

Throughout the journey, Gibbs meets residents, farmers, conservationists, and biologists who are working to protect their islands and preserve fragile ecosystems for future generations.

Their stories illustrate how Caribbean communities are adapting to environmental pressures while seeking innovative ways to safeguard biodiversity and strengthen resilience against climate-related threats.

Spotlight on Curaçao

Curaçao is featured alongside the other Caribbean islands of the Kingdom, offering viewers an opportunity to see both the island's natural beauty and the environmental challenges it faces.

Issues such as coral reef health, coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development are expected to play a prominent role in the series.

The documentary also aims to increase awareness among audiences in the European Netherlands about the ecological importance of the Caribbean territories and their vulnerability to global climate change.

Weekly Broadcast Beginning July 7

Natuur in de Cariben will premiere on July 7 and will air weekly on Dutch public broadcaster NPO 2.

The six-episode series is expected to provide a rare and comprehensive look at the natural heritage of the Caribbean Kingdom, while highlighting the efforts of local communities working to protect some of the region's most valuable ecosystems.
