New approach to migrants in Curaçao receives support from HRDC Human Rights Organization

Local | By Correspondent October 5, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - The Human Rights Defense Curaçao (HRDC) organization has responded positively to the proposal from the Minister of Finance and Public Health for a new approach to permits for migrants. This proposal could potentially bring an end to the long-standing migrant issue on the island.

The initiative was unveiled on a symbolic day: the Day of Restoration of Tula, an important figure in the fight against slavery in Curaçao. HRDC sees the proposal as a step toward humanity and the prevention of modern forms of slavery.

Key Points

One of the key points in the proposal is the possibility for undocumented migrants to obtain a medical insurance policy. This is a crucial requirement for obtaining a residence permit.

Since 2022, HRDC has collaborated with the private sector to make this insurance option accessible to a larger percentage of the population than previously estimated. Two companies now offer such insurance policies.

Kingdom

However, according to HRDC, it's not just about health and financial issues. Humanitarian and human rights aspects, as well as the responsibilities of the Kingdom, also play a crucial role.

Since 2020, HRDC has been calling for a balanced migrant policy and urging cooperation among various ministries, including those of Justice and SOAW.

With the recent recognition of the importance of this issue by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Public Health, HRDC hopes that other involved ministries will also take responsibility. HRDC believes that a policy in the best interest of everyone in Curaçao, not just newcomers, is essential.
