New Air Quality Standards Come Into Effect in Curaçao

Local | By Correspondent January 15, 2025

WILLEMSTAD A significant section of the National Ordinance on Air Quality officially came into force in January, setting new air quality standards at the neighborhood level. These regulations replace previous ministerial guidelines and follow a 2022 court ruling requiring nationally codified air quality standards.

The Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) emphasized the use of an advanced monitoring system operational since 2010, with current measurements conducted in areas like Kas Chikitu and Beth Chaim.

Although the implementation of certain provisions within the Environmental Nuisance Ordinance has been delayed, the ministry assured that this does not impact the functionality of the 14-year-old monitoring system. Recent maintenance on the monitoring equipment was conducted in collaboration with Amsterdam's Public Health Service (GGD).

Additionally, responsibilities for air quality monitoring are being transferred from the GMN Minister to the newly established Inspectorate for Public Health, Environment, and Nature.

Annual air quality reports, including 2024 data, will be made publicly available via the Landscourant and digital platforms, ensuring greater transparency and public awareness.
