| By Correspondent March 23, 2026

THE HAGUE – The Dutch government has stepped up communication with the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom in response to rising tensions in the region, with local authorities receiving more frequent updates on security developments in recent months.

This was outlined by Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Berendsen in a letter to the Dutch Senate, in which he stated that contact with the islands has been intensified since the summer of last year due to evolving geopolitical developments.

According to the minister, information is being shared through multiple channels. These include the Special Envoy for Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, as well as the island governors of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba. The Ministry of Defense also plays a role, maintaining regular contact with local authorities through the Commander of Naval Forces in the Caribbean.

The Dutch government emphasized the importance of ensuring that the islands are informed in a timely and careful manner about developments that could affect their security. At the same time, officials noted that the sharing of sensitive information must be handled within appropriate confidentiality frameworks.

While no specific threat has been identified, the government acknowledged that current developments are a cause for concern and require heightened attention to regional security.

The increased coordination reflects the strategic position of the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom, particularly in light of ongoing geopolitical tensions in the wider region.
