Neighbors of Baoase concerned about access to the sea

Local | By Correspondent September 24, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Neighbors of the Baoase Resort have expressed their concerns about the planned restoration work on the breakwater at Baoase, which they fear could lead to the loss of public access to the sea. Although the official purpose of the work is to repair the breakwater in preparation for hurricane season, locals worry that the plans may go beyond just repairs and could ultimately restrict public access to this popular recreational area.

The restoration work, carried out by Flamingo Development Corporation N.V., has been approved based on permits from 2009 and 2012. Baoase stresses that the repairs are necessary to keep the coastline safe for both residents and tourists. However, local residents argue that this does not fully align with previous agreements, which indicated that the breakwater would remain accessible to the public.

According to the residents, the current plan suggests that the breakwater could potentially become part of Baoase, limiting public access to the area. This has raised significant concerns among the locals, who currently use the spot for fishing and recreation.

After receiving a letter from Baoase about the planned work, residents have reached out to various government agencies for clarification, but so far, no concrete answers have been provided. As a result, worries about losing access to the area continue to grow.
