WILLEMSTAD - According to the latest data, almost every general practitioner in Curaçao is now affiliated with the Huisartsenpost (HAP), with a coverage rate of approximately 96%.
When the HAP was established last year, over 15% of GPs were not yet connected. In a recent podcast, Jean-Pierre Doran, director of the HAP, explained that the goal is to ensure that the service is always available when a patient’s regular GP is unreachable. He expressed satisfaction with the high coverage rate.
Before the HAP was created, patients who contacted their GP outside of office hours were given the phone number of the on-call doctor. However, many complaints arose about unanswered calls, leaving the emergency room as the only alternative. The HAP has now resolved this issue, ensuring better access to medical care.
