Nearly 28% of Households in Curaçao Report Issues with Stray Dogs

Local | By Correspondent April 9, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Almost 28% of households in Curaçao are facing issues with stray dogs, according to recent data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). In addition to this problem, a significant percentage of residents also complain about pests, the lack of street lighting, and local pollution. The CBS conducted research among 60,075 households, with 38.9% reporting some form of inconvenience.

Regarding the issue of stray dogs, the Ministry of Justice has noted an increase in incidents involving dogs causing disturbances. To address this growing concern, a draft law is currently being prepared that could require dog owners to muzzle their pets in public spaces. If the law is passed, owners who fail to comply with these regulations could face fines, and dogs disrupting public order could be confiscated.

This proposed legislation aims to mitigate the rising number of complaints and ensure the safety and well-being of both residents and animals on the island.
