WILLEMSTAD - In a successful operation, the Navy ship Zr. Ms. Groningen intercepted a significant drug shipment during the night from Monday to Tuesday. Approximately 500 kilos of marijuana were confiscated. The defense vessel had been on patrol for less than 24 hours when the Coast Guard alerted them to a suspicious go-fast vessel. Swift action was taken as the Groningen launched its two fast boats to intercept the vessel. The four smugglers aboard the go-fast immediately surrendered. Both the suspects and the seized drugs were handed over to the Coast Guard, who have already disposed of the narcotics.
Since May, the Groningen has been actively serving as a station ship in the Caribbean, conducting counter-drug operations, providing support to the Coast Guard, and participating in humanitarian aid efforts.
