National Security Congress organized by VDC and DRR to address risks in Curaçao

Local | By Press release February 26, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - On Thursday, February 27, 2024, the "Veiligheidheidsdienst Curaçao" (VDC) together with the "Directie Risicobeheersing en Rampenbeleid" (DRR) of the Ministry of General Affairs (AZ) is organizing a congress on the theme of National Security at the Renaissance Hotel. On this day, discussions will focus on the risks that may pose a threat to the country as well as the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The event will also highlight the risks that may affect Curaçao originating from other countries but could have an impact on the island. Analyses have shown that Curaçao faces more risks than traditional ones such as hurricanes, rough seas, or flooding. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of providing information about the potential threats to Curaçao and how vital sectors of the country can prepare for them. It is crucial to have a comprehensive view of how both the community and vital institutions can be prepared for eventual risks and mitigate the effects that these risks may bring.

The Ministry of General Affairs, responsible for national security in collaboration with organizations such as VDC and DRR, is tasked with implementing laws and management for national security. Due to this responsibility and the importance of this topic, steps have been taken to organize the first national security congress. The goal of this congress is to hear from concerned sectors and the community on how they perceive the risks that may threaten our national security.

During the congress, discussions will elaborate on the identified risks in the risk profiles of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, known as the 'Rijksbrede Veiligheidsstrategie 2023-2028,' and Curaçao, with its 'Risicoprofiel Curaçao.' The risk profile of Curaçao can provide a broader perspective on the risks that may affect the island.

The national security congress will take place over the entire day and will be divided into two parts. The morning session will involve stakeholders who have been pre-identified and invited to delve into how they perceive the threats and risks present in Curaçao. The afternoon session will be open to the general public, allowing them to share their views on the threats to our national security. Considering the high interest in the congress and the limited seating capacity, the afternoon session is only available to pre-registered participants who have received confirmation of their attendance.
