WILLEMSTAD - The unmanned reconnaissance aircraft MQ-9 Reaper will remain in Curaçao for another approximately 6 months. This aircraft collects data and other information from the sky, supporting defense and military organizations in the Caribbean region, including efforts against organized crime. The MQ-9's deployment was initially scheduled to conclude this week.
By gathering intelligence, the air force personnel operating the Reaper are also preparing for more challenging tasks and larger operations.
The air force has had the Reaper since February 2022. Favorable weather conditions and airspace availability led to the decision to test the unmanned system from Curaçao.
Thanks to satellite control, the aircraft can be operated globally. This system aligns with the Defense's goal of acting based on information.
The Reaper is stationed at Hato Airport. This marks the third time the deployment from Curaçao has been extended by six months.
Of the four aircraft delivered, three are based in Curaçao. Last June, Defense announced plans to acquire an additional four MQ-9 Reaper reconnaissance aircraft.
