MP Thodé questions why Curaçao flag flies lower than Dutch flag at Hato Airport

WILLEMSTAD – Member of Parliament Rigoletto Thodé has raised questions about the positioning of the Curaçao flag at Hato Airport, asking why it appears to be flown lower than the Dutch flag at certain locations.

The MFK parliamentarian submitted written questions to Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas after observing the situation at the bases of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee and the Coast Guard at the airport.

According to Thodé, the Curaçao flag is being hoisted lower than the Dutch flag at those sites, a situation he says could conflict with the Flag Ordinance of Curaçao adopted in 2024.

The regulation states that when multiple flags are flown together, they must be treated equally. Among other provisions, the ordinance specifies that flags should be of equal size and placed at the same height when displayed side by side.

Thodé wants to know whether the government is aware of the current arrangement and whether the display of the flags complies with the legal provisions.

The MP also asked whether there are agreements in place with institutions such as the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee and the Coast Guard regarding the use and placement of flags at their facilities on Curaçao.

In addition, Thodé is seeking clarification on whether the government will take action if it is determined that the flag ordinance is not being properly followed.
