WILLEMSTAD – Member of Parliament Ishahier Monte is urging the government to reconsider how public disturbances in the Saliña area are being addressed. In written questions to Minister of Justice Shalten Hato, Monte expressed concerns about the frequent police presence, road closures, and disruptions to businesses in the area.
According to Monte, measures taken to control misbehavior often come at the expense of local entrepreneurs, including truk’i pan vendors, nightclubs, and bowling alleys. “When Saliña is closed off and people cannot pass through, it directly affects the sales of these businesses,” he said.
Monte stressed that these businesses employ workers, pay taxes, and contribute to the island’s economy, and therefore their operations should not be unnecessarily hindered by law enforcement interventions.
He has called on Minister Hato to clarify the police’s strategy in Saliña and to ensure that public order enforcement is balanced with the interests of local commerce.
