MP Ana Maria Pauletta seeks clarity from Justice Minister Hato on National Security Service reorganization

Local | By Correspondent October 31, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Member of Parliament Ana Maria Pauletta has formally requested additional details from Minister of Justice Shalten Hato on the progress of the National Security Service (LBD) reorganization, an issue recently highlighted during a parliamentary session held on September 26. Concerns raised in the session focused on the critical role of the LBD in maintaining government security and the delays faced by its staff regarding structural improvements. Minister Hato acknowledged the essential work carried out by the LBD and confirmed that the unit’s reorganization plan was submitted to the ministerial cabinet back in 2022, though budget limitations have since delayed its implementation.

In her letter, MP Pauletta emphasized the need for transparency surrounding the reorganization's financial requirements and requested detailed clarification on the status of LBD members’ pay scales. According to reports, some employees are reportedly assigned to "scale 6," which lacks upward mobility and negatively impacts their retirement benefits, while others are on a higher "scale 7."

To address these concerns, MP Pauletta has formally requested that Parliament receive a copy of the LBD reorganization plan and confirmation of whether it was reviewed by the Council of Ministers. Additionally, she requested an official estimate of the funds required to implement the reorganization as outlined in the 2022 plan.

Furthermore, Pauletta seeks clarification on whether certain LBD members are indeed limited to “scale 6” without advancement opportunities, which directly impacts pension benefits. She also asked Minister Hato to confirm if “scale 7” can be established as the minimum standard for all LBD members, allowing those currently on “scale 6” to transition to “scale 7” to prevent salary discrimination.

With 2025 budget discussions underway, MP Pauletta has emphasized the urgency of receiving answers to these questions in a timely manner.
