AMSTERDAM - More than eight Dutch lawyers have expressed their interest in defending Urvin ‘Nuto’ Wawoe in Curaçao, with none of them being local attorneys. Wawoe, a leading figure in the No Limit Soldiers gang from Koraal Specht, is currently awaiting his trial in the Netherlands.
Urvin ‘Nuto’ Wawoe was flown from the Dominican Republic to the Netherlands via Curaçao at the end of May. He arrived in Curaçao under the watch of fifteen FBI agents. The Dutch lawyers now aiming to take on his defense must first affiliate with a local law firm to handle the case on the island.
Wawoe is suspected of involvement in murder, large-scale drug trafficking, and money laundering in both Curaçao and Sint Maarten.
His arrest is part of the Themis investigation, a comprehensive probe into criminal organizations in Curaçao and Sint Maarten. In November 2020, Shurandy ‘Tyson’ Quant, a childhood friend of Wawoe from the Koraal Specht neighborhood and another key figure in the NLS, was arrested in Dubai during the first phase of this investigation.
The ongoing parts of the Themis investigation are expected to shed more light on the extent of the criminal networks and the involvement of other suspects. Curaçao hopes to end the influence of these gangs and enhance safety on the island through this legal process.
The subsequent stages of the Themis investigation are scheduled for October and December this year.
