'More attention needed for study choice, cultural differences and language'

Local | By Correspondent September 26, 2022

ORANJESTAD - To support Caribbean students during their studies, a working conference between Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, the BES islands and the Netherlands will take place this week at the University of Aruba. The Minister of Education and Sports Affairs Endy Croes (MEP) will officially open the conference 'study success for Caribbean Students'.

During the conference from September 26 to 28, the countries want to jointly develop support programs with concrete and structural measures, so that students can successfully complete their studies. Many of the students who move to the Netherlands for further education do not pass their studies because they run into problems.

The themes that participants will be working on during the conference focus, among other things, on the good preparation of students who want to follow a course in higher education. Attention is also paid to careful transfer and monitoring of students, training opportunities on the islands, and study mobility within the Kingdom.

A steering group was set up to support students during the ministerial Four-Country Consultation in 2021. This includes representatives from the government and education of the four countries. They have developed an action plan to improve the study success of Caribbean students. In addition, a project group was started in 2021. They will share the current state of affairs and the measures taken with the participants during the conference.
