Ministry of Justice organizes team-building afternoon with chain partners for awareness of human trafficking and smuggling

Local | By Press release September 11, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Justice has organized a team-building afternoon for justice chain partners. The purpose of this gathering was to raise awareness among all stakeholders regarding the consequences of and recognition of the signs of human trafficking and smuggling.

The Minister of Justice, Minister Hato, and the Bureau for the Prevention of Human Trafficking and Smuggling of the Ministry of Justice collaborated with chain partners to organize this educational afternoon. The location for this meeting was Caribbean Cinemas in Sambil, where participants came together to collectively watch the movie "The Sound of Freedom."

This activity marks one of the many initiatives that Minister Hato of Justice has launched to promote closer collaboration in the area of his priority theme, Human Trafficking and Smuggling. By bringing together experts, policymakers, and other stakeholders in an informal and inspiring setting, the Ministry of Justice hopes to send a powerful message that the fight against this despicable crime requires a joint effort. In line with the recommendations of the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report from the U.S. Department of State, the Ministry of Justice emphasizes the serious approach to human trafficking and smuggling. These efforts demonstrate our steadfast commitment to taking the right steps towards creating effective awareness and combating human trafficking and smuggling more effectively.

During the meeting, significant insights were shared by two delegation members from Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.), who flew in from the United States specifically for this event. The delegation members discussed the challenges as well as collaboration opportunities in the field of human trafficking and smuggling during this event. Participants were encouraged to share their expertise and experiences, with the hope that this would contribute to a more coordinated and effective approach to these issues. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) was also present with the OM Van to provide information and answer questions regarding the prosecution of human trafficking and smuggling. This underscores the close collaboration between the Ministry of Justice and the OM in addressing this crime more effectively and holding perpetrators accountable.

The Ministry of Justice extends its gratitude to all chain partners for their involvement and dedication to this important issue. Together, we strive for a human trafficking and smuggling-free Curaçao.
