WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Health, Nature, and Environment issued another warning yesterday afternoon for Portuguese Man-of-War in local waters. This warning followed an incident where a beachgoer at Lagun came into contact with the tentacles of the large jellyfish and needed medical treatment from a doctor. Exactly a week ago, the ministry had already issued a warning for beaches in the southwest. According to the authorities, families or groups going to the beaches with children during the last days of the school holiday should be cautious.
Each year, during this season with temporary changes in wind or sea currents, Portuguese Man-of-War can drift toward our coast. The shape of this sea creature allows it to move in the direction of the wind over the sea. It is relatively easy to recognize in the water by its shape, which resembles a balloon or a purple plastic bag filled with air, approximately 25 centimeters in size, floating on the sea surface. If you see it, keep your distance and do not attempt to remove it from the water. Its tentacles underwater can extend more than 30 meters.
If you come into contact with its tentacles, carefully remove any remaining tentacles from the skin without rubbing, rinse the skin with seawater, and apply warm water to the affected area. You can also apply vinegar (1 to 2 capfuls in 2 liters of water). If your body feels warm or if there is intense pain, apply ice and visit your doctor.
