Minister Silvania: Tax refunds must be paid before Christmas

Local | By Correspondent November 12, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Minister of Finance, Javier Silvania, has instructed the Tax Department to prioritize the processing of income tax assessments. According to the law, the inspector must issue the tax assessments within three months. Minister Silvania is determined that the Tax Department adheres to the law and ensures that citizens receive their tax refunds before Christmas.

As part of the measures to achieve this, the minister has mandated that all employees involved in the assessment process must refrain from taking any leave until 70% of the work backlog for 2023 and 2022 has been processed. This announcement was made in a press release issued by the Ministry of Finance yesterday.

“The income tax is a critical pillar of our financial structure. It is unacceptable that large backlogs remain while our population relies on correct and timely tax assessments. With this prioritization and strict implementation policy, we will ensure efficient operations and meet our obligations,” stated Minister Silvania.

The minister has also demanded weekly progress reports on both automatic and manual processing. This measure will ensure transparency and enable the minister to make adjustments as needed, according to the press release.
