Minister Silvania files formal complaint over offensive language on TV Direct

Local | By Correspondent November 8, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Minister of Finance Javier Silvania has filed a formal complaint with the Regulatory Authority following a recent broadcast on TV Direct. According to the minister, the broadcast contained "offensive language, false and unfounded claims, and allegations" directed at him. Silvania submitted the complaint before the television station issued an apology, as stated in a press release.

The broadcast in question featured an interview with politician Elvis de Andrade, who reportedly used derogatory language and made accusations about the minister's performance and responsibilities. Silvania emphasized that while the offensive term was not fully articulated, the intent to defame his reputation was clear.

In his statement, Silvania said, "Although the derogatory term was not fully spoken, the intention was clearly offensive and aimed at discrediting the minister’s reputation. The combination of offensive language and unfounded allegations represents a serious violation of professional standards for news broadcasting."

As a result of this incident, Minister Silvania has formally requested that the Regulatory Authority implement clear quality standards and conduct guidelines for the media to prevent similar incidents in the future. He also expects the Regulatory Authority to take appropriate action against TV Direct.
