WILLEMSTAD - In a recent development, the Minister of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) of Curaçao, Javier Silvania, has raised apprehensions regarding the operational and financial status of the Animal Protection Curaçao Foundation (SDBC). This concern stems from the Minister's desire for clarity and accountability from the foundation, prompting a request for a comprehensive financial report and insights into future plans.
The Minister's call for transparency follows the announcement by SDBC regarding the closure of the animal shelter in Parera, citing financial constraints, on the occasion of their 75th anniversary. This decision confines the foundation's activities solely to sterilization and education projects, prompting Silvania to express grave concerns over the potential disruption of vital animal protection services.
Of notable concern to the Minister is the delayed submission of financial statements for the year 2023 and the pending subsidy request for 2024. Silvania has labeled this delay as a display of 'negligence' on the part of the SDBC board, particularly in response to inquiries from Veterinary Affairs and other pertinent stakeholders.
The financial challenges faced by the foundation are compounded by a reduction in donation income, partially attributed to alleged 'unfair attacks' from external entities. Consequently, the foundation finds itself compelled to implement austerity measures, including staff layoffs and actively seeking adoptive homes for the animals under its care.
In light of these developments, the Minister has formally requested an update from SDBC by May 15th. This update is expected to provide comprehensive insights into the current financial state, the projected timeline for financial reporting, and strategies aimed at revitalizing the foundation's efficacy. Such transparency is deemed imperative to ensure the pivotal role of Animal Protection Curaçao in upholding the newly introduced Animal Welfare Ordinance.
Silvania has underscored the indispensable role of SDBC within the Curaçao community and emphasized the need for unwavering support towards the foundation's mission. Simultaneously, he has stressed the importance of transparent governance and collaboration between the foundation and governmental bodies to safeguard the continuity of animal protection endeavors.
