WILLEMSTAD - This week, Minister of Finance Javier Silvania sent an extensive letter to the Director of the Curaçao Tax Department, Alfonso Trona, reminding him of his personal responsibility regarding an outstanding amount from the 5 million guilders that were paid without proper authorization. Silvania emphasized that Trona is accountable for the remaining balance. The minister also highlighted several key actions that need to be taken to improve the services of the Tax office.
Silvania has been under fire from the opposition for his decision to cancel tax debts dating back to before 2017. In his defense, the minister stated that the Receiver is authorized to grant discounts on tax payments. In the letter, Silvania reiterated that he will "follow the law when handling tax reductions."
