Minister of Finance wants to renegotiate agreement on coastguard

Local | By Correspondent January 6, 2023

WILLEMSTAD – Minister of Finance Javier Silvania has called on his colleague and fellow party member Shalten Hato of Justice via Facebook to renegotiate an administrative agreement concluded with the Netherlands on the financing of the Caribbean Coast Guard.

In 2021, the four countries of the Kingdom agreed on extra investments in the Coast Guard, partly due to the necessary replacement of equipment. As a result, Curaçao's contribution will increase from 3.2 million euros to 7 million euros as of this year. Silvania wants Hato, together with his counterparts from Aruba and Sint Maarten, to renegotiate with the Netherlands because the countries have not yet recovered financially from the corona crisis.

The suspension of the two senior Justice Department officials is related to the appeal of Silvania, seen by many as the true leader of the Pisas cabinet.

The Coastguard plays an important role in protecting the territorial borders of the Kingdom. Due to the continuous flow of Venezuelans who try to reach the ABC islands illegally by boat and drug shipments, the Coast Guard is busier than ever.
