Minister of Finance in Parliament over billion-dollar tax exemptions

Local | By Correspondent August 20, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Members of Parliament were not given time to review critical documents submitted by Finance Minister Javier Silvania prior to Monday morning's parliamentary meeting on billion-guilder tax exemptions. These documents, which were submitted late, contained information regarding the decision to exempt billions in taxes.

PAR leader Quincy Girigorie requested more time to study the documents, but Parliament Chairperson Charetti America-Franciska denied the request. Silvania argued that he could not share many of the internal documents from the tax receiver as they contained sensitive information about politicians and political parties with significant tax arrears.

Additionally, Member of Parliament Giselle Mc William of the MAN-PIN party called for the presence of the head of the Tax Inspection, Jamila Isenia, and the national tax receiver, Alfonso Trona, at the meeting. This request was also denied. America-Franciska noted that the officials in question do not fall under Parliament but under the minister's responsibility, meaning she could not compel them to attend the session.

Silvania issued a clear warning to those in attendance: “Do not challenge me, so that I reveal nothing.”
