Minister Middelhof Calls for Stronger Cooperation in Agriculture Sector

Local, | By Press release March 24, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Minister of Economic Development Roderick Middelhof is urging farmers in Curaçao to strengthen cooperation with the government by providing up-to-date information on local production, emphasizing that accurate data is essential to protect local agriculture and ensure sufficient supply in the market.

In a letter addressed to farmers, the minister highlighted the importance of timely and reliable production data as part of broader efforts to create a more coordinated, transparent, and efficient agricultural sector.

Middelhof expressed appreciation for the role farmers play in supporting the community, strengthening food security, and contributing to Curaçao’s economic development. He noted that under current legislation, import permits for agricultural products are only granted when local production is insufficient to meet market demand.

To fairly assess import requests, the Ministry of Economic Development (MEO) must have a clear and current overview of local production levels. However, the ministry has found that in practice, production data is not always submitted fully or on time, which can lead to shortages and increased pressure to allow imports.

In recent years, MEO has taken several steps to organize and strengthen the sector. These include hosting information sessions, conducting visits to local farms (kunukus), establishing a WhatsApp communication group, and developing a digital application to support production planning.

To improve the system, the ministry is now introducing stricter measures. Only production data from farmers registered with MEO will be considered, and farmers must submit their production information in writing at least two weeks before harvest. This can be done via WhatsApp or email.

According to the minister, these measures are intended to create a clearer and more efficient system that protects local farmers from unnecessary imports while ensuring that the population has access to sufficient fresh products.

Middelhof called on all farmers to actively cooperate and consistently share information with the ministry. He stressed that balanced decisions benefiting both producers and the wider community can only be achieved through strong communication and collaboration.

“Together, we can further strengthen Curaçao’s agricultural sector and work toward a future in which local production is a key source of prosperity, food security, and economic development for our island,” the minister said.
