THE HAGUE - During a visit to The Hague, Minister of Justice Shalten Hato met with Minister of Defense Kasja Ollongren to discuss the deployment of the Marechaussee, the regional geopolitical situation, and developments regarding the Curaçao militia.
One of the topics discussed was the administrative agreement, which requires Curaçao to repay 3.84 million euros to the Netherlands. Hato and Ollongren explored the possibility of establishing a working group to propose a solution that would enable Curaçao to fulfill this financial obligation.
Furthermore, both ministers acknowledged that the state law governing the coastguard is outdated since its introduction in 2010. They emphasized the need for updating and improving the law through a review process.
The discussion highlighted the positive cooperation with the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee. However, Minister Ollongren expressed the desire to expand the Curaçao militia, considering the age of its members. This expansion is seen as crucial in providing individuals with better prospects when they eventually leave the militia.
