Minister Charles Cooper calls for stricter action against sewer violations

Local | By Correspondent December 2, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Minister of Traffic, Transportation, and Spatial Planning (VVRP), Charles Cooper (MFK), has publicly urged the Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) to take stricter action against businesses contributing to sewer blockages. His call to action, posted on Facebook, responds to complaints from business owners about sewage water flooding streets, including the Brionplein area.

According to Cooper, businesses improperly disposing of grease into the sewer system or failing to regularly clean their grease traps are violating the conditions of their nuisance permits. Photographs shared by the minister show sewage water filled with toilet paper and other non-dissolvable waste, leading to severe blockages.

The minister stressed that the high costs associated with resolving these issues ultimately fall on the community. He emphasized the urgent need for stricter enforcement to prevent further damage and excessive repair costs.

“Businesses must take responsibility and properly regulate their wastewater disposal,” Cooper stated firmly, adding, “This cannot continue.”

As of now, the Ministry of GMN has not officially responded to Cooper’s appeal.
