Military Concludes Security Operation at Suffisant Barracks for Themis Trial

WILLEMSTAD – After two weeks of heightened security, the Dutch Ministry of Defence officially concluded its operation at the Suffisant Naval Barracks on Friday, July 5, where the high-profile Themis criminal trial took place in first instance.

The Governor of Curaçao had formally requested military assistance due to security concerns surrounding the case, which centers on Urvin "Nuto" Wawoe, the alleged leader of the No Limit Soldiers criminal organization.

Highest Security Level Without Incident

In response, the Defence Ministry deployed troops under Alert State C, its second-highest level of readiness. Soldiers provided round-the-clock patrols, monitored airspace, and controlled access to the barracks, which had been specially outfitted to meet elevated security standards.

The operation involved several specialized military units, including the Marine Squadron Caribbean, Compagnie in de West, Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS), the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service, and the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, in collaboration with the Curaçao Police Force (KPC).

According to Defence officials, the operation was completed successfully and without any incidents.

Wawoe Returned to the Netherlands

Urvin ‘Nuto’ Wawoe, who had been held on Curaçao for the trial, was flown back to the Netherlands on Sunday evening aboard a Corendon flight. He remains in pretrial detention there, awaiting the verdict. Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence, and the court is scheduled to issue its ruling on September 23 at 8:30 AM.

Authorities initially attempted to arrange his return for Saturday, but logistical issues caused a delay. Unlike his arrival in Curaçao, Wawoe’s departure involved less conspicuous security measures, to avoid alarming fellow passengers on the commercial flight.

The high-security trial and transfer mark a significant moment in Curaçao’s ongoing efforts to address organized crime and ensure justice in sensitive cases.
