Milestone partnership: RdK and Deloitte join forces to restore Curaçao's mangrove ecosystems

Local | By Correspondent April 5, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - RdK, the owner of the Curaçao refinery, and the Deloitte Mangrove Restoration Foundation have formed a partnership aimed at restoring and preserving the mangrove ecosystems in Curaçao.

The signing of the collaboration agreement between Oscar Snijders, chairman of Deloitte, and Patrick Newton, CEO of RdK, signifies a significant step in the ongoing battle against climate change and the degradation of coastal areas in Curaçao.

Pooling their resources, RdK and Deloitte are committed to enhancing and expanding the mangrove reforestation project, spearheaded by Ryan de Jongh, with a particular focus on the environmentally critical Ramsar areas. Innovative methods and technologies are being deployed, especially in areas affected by pollution, to ensure the success of reforestation efforts.

Mangroves play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by sequestering carbon, preventing coastal erosion, and providing habitats for diverse wildlife. However, the destruction of these ecosystems due to human activities such as deforestation and pollution poses a significant threat to the environment.

The joint project includes a comprehensive restoration plan that encompasses planting new mangroves, along with monitoring efforts and active community involvement. RdK and Deloitte are committed to making a lasting impact on nature conservation in Curaçao by engaging local stakeholders and promoting environmental education initiatives.
