MFK Party to announce position on coalition after partner's arrest

Local | By Correspondent November 13, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The political party Movementu Futuro Kòrsou (MFK) is set to release a statement on Tuesday regarding its position within the current coalition, following the arrest of coalition partner Michelangelo ‘Lo’ Martines (KEM) on suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering.

On Monday evening, MFK held an internal meeting to discuss the situation. Prime Minister and MFK leader Gilmar ‘Pik’ Pisas confirmed that the party deliberated on Martines' arrest. Pisas described the meeting as constructive and stated that he would complete a specific task on Tuesday, which would later be announced publicly.

The Prime Minister emphasized that MFK intends to consult with other coalition partners before making a final decision on the matter. He also mentioned that the two candidates proposed for the ministerial position are nearing the end of the screening process, which will soon be submitted for approval to the governor.

According to sources, MFK members have given the party leadership a clear mandate to continue the coalition, provided that Martines agrees to relinquish his seat. If this occurs, Anthony Godett could take over the seat, allowing the coalition to remain intact.

For now, MFK appears to be waiting for KEM's response to the arrest. A decision on whether Martines' provisional detention will be extended is expected on Thursday, at which point MFK is likely to make further decisions about the future of the coalition.
