WILLEMSTAD - The Movementu Futuro Kòrsou (MFK), a prominent political party in Curaçao, is celebrating its 13th anniversary. Founded by former Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte in May 2010, the party has played a significant role in the island's political landscape. Since its inception, MFK has made remarkable strides, becoming the second-largest party in Curaçao in the elections held on August 27 of the same year.
Under Schotte's leadership, the MFK quickly gained momentum, attracting support from a diverse range of constituents. However, his political journey faced a major setback in 2018 when he was arrested and subsequently convicted for corruption, leading to his resignation. Gilmar Pisas, the current prime minister, assumed the role of party leader during that period.
Despite the challenges faced by its founder, the MFK has managed to maintain its presence and influence in Curaçao's political landscape. Currently holding nine out of the 21 seats in Parliament, the party continues to champion its agenda and represent the interests of its supporters.
The 2021 elections proved to be a significant milestone for the MFK, as the party experienced unprecedented growth, securing an additional five seats. This achievement marked a historic moment for Curaçao, as it had been over three decades since any party had experienced such a substantial increase in parliamentary representation.
As the MFK commemorates its 13th anniversary, party members and supporters are reflecting on the party's journey and its contributions to the island's political discourse. The MFK remains committed to addressing the needs and concerns of the people of Curaçao and shaping a future that aligns with its vision and principles. With a strong parliamentary presence, the party continues to play a crucial role in shaping the policies and decisions that affect the lives of the citizens of Curaçao.
