MFK asks parliament to involve additional institutions in debate on deteriorating buildings in Willemstad

WILLEMSTAD – The parliamentary faction of Movementu Futuro Kòrsou (MFK) has requested that additional institutions be invited to participate in the parliamentary discussion on the growing problem of deteriorating historic buildings in downtown Willemstad.

According to the faction, the issue should not only be examined from the perspective of monument preservation and spatial planning, but also from the standpoint of public safety and risk management.

In a letter to Parliament President Fergino Brownbill, MFK asked that Stichting Monumentenfonds and the crisis management organization COC3 also be invited to the discussions, alongside the Ministry of Traffic, Transport and Urban Planning, Stichting Monumentenzorg and NV Stadsherstel.

The party argues that the problem of neglected buildings in the historic city center is not only a heritage issue but also a matter of safety for residents, business owners and visitors.

Buildings in poor condition may pose serious risks, the faction noted, particularly if there is a danger of structural collapse or other emergencies.

MFK believes that Stichting Monumentenfonds could provide Parliament with insight into financing options, restoration programs and sustainable management of historic properties. Meanwhile, COC3 could contribute expertise on risk assessments, emergency preparedness and preventive measures in case of a potential incident.

By including these organizations in the parliamentary discussions, the faction hopes lawmakers will gain a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges surrounding deteriorating buildings in Willemstad’s historic center and be better equipped to consider possible solutions.
