MEO initiates investigation into fish sales and prices

Ministry aims to ensure access to fish at a fair price

WILLEMSTAD – In its efforts to achieve fair prices, the Ministry of Economic Development (MEO) has started to conduct a "zero measurement" on fish sales in Curaçao.

This week, MEO inspectors will begin visiting the various fish vendors within the fish supply chain to collect various important data. This will include recording the frequency of fish sales, whether it is offered fresh or frozen, and the prices at which the fish is being offered to different buyers.

The main goal is to determine whether fish prices need to be regulated and, if so, which types of fish and under what conditions. The last time fish prices were regulated was in the early 1980s, and since then, no such regulations have been in place. Any potential regulation of fish prices will take into account the interests of all parties involved in the fish supply chain, with a special focus on consumers, to ensure greater access to fish consumption.

Through this statement, the Ministry of Economic Development requests the cooperation of all parties involved in the fish sales chain to expedite this investigation for the benefit of everyone involved.
