WILLEMSTAD - Member of Parliament Anthony Godett (KEM) has requested a meeting with the Justice Committee of the Parliament to discuss the functioning of the judiciary on the island. In his letter to Committee Chair Eduard Braam (MFK), Godett expressed his intention to use the meeting as a platform to address issues regarding the operations of the justice system on Curaçao.

Godett was sworn in last week as the new Staten member for KEM, replacing party leader Michelangelo ‘Lo’ Martines. Martines was arrested on November 5th in connection with a criminal investigation into drug trafficking and money laundering.

In a statement, Godett referred to Martines as a political prisoner and criticized the treatment of politicians and ministers by the justice system on the island. A day after his swearing-in, Godett sent a letter to the Justice Committee, urging for a prompt dialogue with the judiciary. “The dialogue must take place in an atmosphere of openness, honesty, and mutual respect,” stated Godett.

Godett has previously expressed concerns about the functioning of the judiciary on Curaçao. “The judiciary on the island holds too much power,” said the Staten member. He advocates for a dialogue with the judiciary to establish clear agreements, similar to past dialogues with trade unions and the agricultural sector.
