ORANJESTAD – The Netherlands-Aruba Society, in collaboration with The Hague University of Applied Sciences and the Dutch UNESCO Commission, is organizing a meeting about education in the islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. The focus will be on the seventy-year-long debate about language in education and its impact on the educational opportunities of students and the development of the islands.
Education advisor Juana Kibbelaar will present her research on the language issue. Students from The Hague University of Applied Sciences will share their experiences with language in education. A panel discussion will follow, led by Mitsuï Croes, with participants including Kathleen Ferrier, chair of the Dutch UNESCO Commission, and Reinier van Zutphen, the National Ombudsman. Also joining the panel will be Glenn Thodé from Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, former commissioner of Bonaire, and Maya Soumah from the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights.
The meeting will address the question of how cooperation within the Kingdom can provide better educational opportunities for young people on the islands. The event will take place on Thursday, April 10, and is free to attend. Interested parties are asked to register in advance.
