McWilliam criticizes delay in emergency meeting on 3 billion guilder tax debt cancellation

Local | By Correspondent September 11, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Giselle McWilliam, leader of the MAN faction in Curaçao’s Parliament, has voiced her frustration over the continued delay in calling an emergency meeting with Finance Minister Javier Silvania. The opposition had requested the meeting several weeks ago to discuss the cancellation of 3 billion guilders in tax debts, but it has yet to be scheduled.

McWilliam emphasized the importance of addressing this issue as soon as possible, especially since the previous parliamentary year ended on Monday, and the new session began yesterday. She used the occasion of the new parliamentary year’s opening to reiterate her concerns about the lack of progress on the meeting request.

In response, Parliament President Charetti America-Francisca stated that efforts are underway to arrange the emergency session for next week. She assured that contact will be made with Minister Silvania to finalize the meeting.

McWilliam’s call for urgency underscores the opposition’s growing impatience with the government’s handling of the significant tax debt issue.
