MarketPlaza: A socially sustainable impact on the community

Local | By Press release December 2, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - As part of the Waterfort Plaza redevelopment, contractor MNO, commissioned by APC, undertook the stripping of the Plaza Hotel complex with a focus on sustainability. During the process, APC and MNO prioritized selecting reusable materials for recycling and repurposing. These sustainability ambitions were further developed into a concrete plan through collaboration with students from the University of Curaçao (UoC) as part of the SustainaBUL program. The initiative examined social, economic, and technical aspects of sustainability.

The MarketPlaza Event

This innovative process culminated in a unique event, MarketPlaza, which took place on October 26 at the Plaza Hotel. During MarketPlaza, materials salvaged from the hotel were offered to the public at low prices. The event attracted a large turnout, ensuring that many materials found a second life. Attendees enthusiastically arrived early to select items and take home a "piece of Plaza."

Giving Back to the Community

APC and MNO are committed to making a positive impact. In line with this mission, the proceeds from MarketPlaza were donated to a charitable cause. The chosen beneficiary was Stichting Daily Meal Program, an organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable members of the community.

Thanks to the funds raised through the sale of reusable materials, the initiative provided the foundation with the resources to serve 1,000 meals to those in need.

Stichting Daily Meal Program

Stichting Daily Meal Program is a non-profit organization powered entirely by volunteers. This dedicated team prepares healthy, warm meals three times a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays—for over 200 individuals facing challenging circumstances.

The program began during the COVID-19 crisis as a response to increased demand for support. Beyond providing meals, the organization promotes a sustainable and self-sufficient future. They maintain a community garden where local residents learn how to grow their own food.

Relying solely on sponsorships and donations, Stichting Daily Meal Program serves as an essential safety net for Curaçao’s most vulnerable populations.

Support This Inspiring Initiative
