WILLEMSTAD – Mangusa Hypermarkt, Mangusa Rio, and Esperamos offer the lowest average prices for daily groceries in Curaçao, according to a price comparison conducted by Fundashon pa Konsumidó, the island’s consumer organization. The March 2025 report shows that these three supermarkets have the lowest average price per product.
Mangusa Hypermarkt and Mangusa Rio provided prices for 82 and 80 products, respectively, with an average price of approximately 19.60 guilders per item. Esperamos, listing 75 products, follows closely with an average price just below 20 guilders. Centrum Supermarkt’s two locations, Centrum Mahaai and Centrum Piscadera, along with Bon Bini, also submitted prices for over 80 products. Centrum’s stores reported an average price slightly above 20.20 guilders, while Bon Bini’s average came in at 21.90 guilders.
A notable detail in the report is that Van den Tweel appears to have the lowest average price per product, at just under 19.50 guilders. However, this figure is based on only 40 listed products, significantly fewer than other supermarkets, making the comparison less representative. When only considering mathematical averages without factoring in the number of products, the results can present a skewed perspective. In contrast, supermarkets like Mangusa and Esperamos not only show lower prices but also submit a more extensive product list, reinforcing their ranking in the comparison.
Price differences between supermarkets are evident not only in overall averages but also in individual items. At Luna Park—a supermarket popular among locals—a kilogram of oxtail (rabu di baka) costs 12.95 guilders, while the same cut of meat is priced at 31.95 guilders at Bon Bini. The cost of sliced cold cuts varies widely as well, ranging from 28.90 to 45.95 guilders depending on the store.
These price differences seem to reflect the target demographics of each supermarket. Mangusa, Esperamos, and Centrum cater to families and budget-conscious shoppers, offering competitive prices across a broad range of products. In contrast, stores such as Best Buy, Vreugdenhil, and Carre Foure fall on the higher end of the spectrum, with average product prices exceeding 23 guilders.
