Mangrove Park forced to close again due to sewage problems

Local | By Correspondent July 13, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Environmental organization Carmabi has decided to close Mangrove Park again this week due to sewage issues. The water has become turbid and very white, like milk, in recent days. Additionally, there is a strong odor," says Carmabi director Paul Stokkerman.

Recently, Carmabi had to cancel their Open Day due to sewage problems. According to Stokkerman, there have been previous issues in the past, but they did not inform the press about them. Now, the sewage problems are becoming more frequent, and they are calling on the government to find a solution.

Stokkerman explains that before Mangrove Park opened its doors, the government was supposed to build a pipeline from the sewage pumping station near SVB (social Insurance Bank) towards St. Annabaai. "This would mean that the wastewater would go to St. Annabaai instead of Mangrove Park."

Stokkerman understands that the pipeline has been constructed, but a few meters are still missing. The Carmabi director hopes that the government will now take the initiative to complete the remaining meters.

"I have been informed that funding for this project is included in the budget, but the government has not made a decision to proceed yet," Stokkerman adds. He hopes that a solution will be worked on as soon as possible.
