WILLEMSTAD - Corendon has succeeded in obtaining a permit to clean the mangrove forest. The forest surrounds the location of the new hotel. This new hotel will be built next to the Corendon Mangrove Beach Resort, Corendon said in a press release.
Because the mangrove forest is a protected area, Corendon hires certified companies that work meticulously so as not to affect nature. The companies have already started working. The concrete activities that are carried out include cleaning the mangroves by dredging and pruning here and there to maintain the health of trees and plants.
Grupo 6, a partnership of various organizations, would like new mangroves to be planted to compensate for the deforestation. The organization also says that they strive to keep the area clean of mosquitoes and contaminated water.
The mangrove area belongs to the reef area of Otrobanda, which is on the Unesco World Heritage List. Mangrove forests are good for biodiversity, but are under serious threat worldwide.
