WILLEMSTAD - A 48-year-old man, known by the initials R.R.M., has been released after being assaulted by fellow inmates in prison. The man, who was held on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a weapon, and destruction of property, was severely beaten in his cell block last Sunday. 

The assault occurred after R.R.M. was lured into a trap by other inmates. They had called him upstairs under the pretense of something to see. Once there, he was pushed into a cell and assaulted. The violence left R.R.M. with a swollen eye, a broken jaw, and swelling on the side of his face, among other injuries. His glasses were also destroyed during the incident. 

R.R.M. had been arrested in connection with an incident on May 8, which garnered widespread attention on social media. A video showing him opening the trunk of a car, getting in, and then crashing into a wall twice went viral. This car was parked near a daycare center on Zadelboomstraat. Another video shows the suspect proposing to his partner, the owner of the car, a few days before the incident. 

R.R.M.'s release follows the violent incident in prison. He remains awaiting his trial regarding the May 8 incident. The investigation into both the assault in prison and the events surrounding the damaged car is still ongoing.
