Local | By Press release February 18, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Over the past weekend, MAN-PIN successfully organized an informational and participatory event for seniors at Hòfi Fidel, bringing together more than 200 elderly participants. The primary goal of this event was to listen to the voices of the elderly and engage with them in a meaningful way.

Throughout the morning, seniors enjoyed live music from DJ Stephen Quan, Típiko Pasa Bon, and the King of Tumba for seniors, Farley Lourens.

A Concrete and Lasting Focus on Senior Well-being

MAN-PIN has made the well-being of seniors a key priority in its vision and policy approach. The party’s candidate list for the upcoming March 21 elections includes several senior representatives, including Suzy Römer, Erwin Raphaela, Gaby Da Costa Gomez, Jovi Alvares, Herbert Römer, Jeanouelle van Leeuwen, and Kenneth Gijsbertha. These individuals have actively contributed to society through their involvement in education, social journalism, community transformation, music, and sports.

As part of the event, Dr. Rob de Lannoy delivered an insightful presentation on aging, raising awareness among attendees. Following his talk, a group discussion exercise was held, allowing each table to compile a list of recommendations and concerns regarding senior well-being in Curaçao.

Key Issues Raised by Participants

During the discussions, several pressing issues affecting the elderly community were highlighted, including:

Public transportation for improved mobility

Transportation costs and accessibility

Neighborhood infrastructure

Stray dog nuisance

Dissatisfaction with the HAP (General Practitioners Post)

Long waiting lists at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC)

Rising cost of living

Inadequate AOV pension for a dignified life

MAN-PIN emphasized that active participation from the community is a core principle of their vision. The event demonstrated that inclusivity in decision-making is possible and necessary. The introduction of Neighborhood Councils was highlighted as an important step in engaging citizens of all ages in governance and decision-making processes.

A Satisfying and Engaging Morning

MAN-PIN’s political leader, Giselle Mc William, expressed her satisfaction with the event, describing it as a beautiful and engaging morning filled with joy, information, and real participation from the elderly community.
