MAN-PIN Commits to Supporting the Elderly: A Comprehensive Plan for Curaçao’s Seniors

Local | By Press release March 20, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – In recent years, little has been done for Curaçao’s senior citizens, who form a significant part of the community. The Old Age Pension (AOV) has not been increased or linked to the rising cost of living, leaving many elderly residents struggling financially. Plans to cut civil servant pensions, specifically the 10% "duurtetoeslag" supplement, remain on the table, further worsening the situation. As a result, seniors relying solely on AOV have fallen into deeper poverty, struggling to afford basic necessities.

A recent incident highlighted the government’s disregard for seniors when a member of parliament suggested that elderly citizens should collect plastic cups after events to make ends meet.

MAN-PIN’s Commitment to a Dignified Life for Seniors

The MAN-PIN party has pledged to introduce a comprehensive reform prioritizing the well-being, protection, and quality of life for Curaçao’s elderly. The party recently signed a manifesto reaffirming its commitment to senior citizens, emphasizing that they contributed immensely to the island’s progress and deserve a dignified and inclusive life.

Among its key policy proposals:

Introduction of a General Pension in addition to AOV, ensuring every senior (65+) receives a minimum income of ANG 1,500 per month, gradually increasing the AOV.

Decoupling government retirees’ pensions from the national budget, linking them solely to inflation and the financial health of the pension fund (APC).

Special Discount Card, providing up to ANG 350 monthly in savings on healthy groceries at supermarkets.

Free Public Transport for seniors aged 65+.

Reduced Taxes and Healthcare Premiums, along with subsidized electricity and water bills for seniors whose income falls below the required threshold for a decent standard of living.

Affordable and Accessible Elderly Care

MAN-PIN plans to implement a high-quality, affordable care system, whether at home or in residential care facilities. This includes:

A dedicated program for seniors wishing to age in place (remain in their own homes).

Significant property tax (OZB) reductions to prevent seniors from losing their homes due to unaffordable taxes.

Adequate financial support for caregivers and the creation of accessible health centers in neighborhoods, prioritizing preventive care and early intervention.

Strict oversight of elderly care homes to ensure safety and quality of life for residents.

Senior-Friendly Infrastructure & Community Participation

Recognizing the importance of safe and accessible housing, MAN-PIN will:

Ensure FKP (social housing) prioritizes maintenance for residents aged 55+.

Provide door-to-door specialized transportation services for seniors.

Improve public infrastructure, such as bus stops with shelters, pedestrian crossings, and speed bumps, to prevent accidents and improve mobility.

Address stray dog issues, which have become a safety concern for seniors in certain neighborhoods.

Ending Discrimination Against the Elderly

MAN-PIN is committed to eliminating age discrimination, including:

Ensuring seniors receive in-person assistance at government service centers, rather than being forced to navigate digital-only systems.

Launching public awareness campaigns on healthy aging and digital literacy.

Encouraging active participation of seniors in neighborhood councils and introducing a Senior Advisory Council to shape policies affecting older adults.

A Moral and Social Obligation

MAN-PIN views these reforms as both a moral and social obligation—a way to honor and recognize the hard work and sacrifices made by Curaçao’s elderly. Through strong policies and concrete actions, the party aims to restore dignity, security, and a better quality of life for the island’s senior citizens.
