WILLEMSTAD - The MAN faction has submitted a legislative amendment to introduce paternity leave. This would apply at the time someone becomes a father. Earlier, the MAN party had proposed maternity leave, which was later adjusted from 12 weeks to 14 weeks and left to the mother's choice.
The introduction of paternity leave provides fathers with five days to cherish and share the precious moments with their child, according to the MAN faction. For us, the role of the father is crucial in the life of their child. The importance of the family, as well as the shared role between mother and father, holds great significance. In the modern world, both mothers and fathers are equal. This is particularly emphasized when we focus on women's emancipation and the role of men/fathers in a family and their shared responsibility.
Five Days
The choice of five days for paternity leave marks, for the MAN faction, a starting point to walk this path and grant fathers a significant place in the life and upbringing of their child.
Scientific studies demonstrate the importance of a father's presence in the first days of a child's life for their development and the process of fatherhood itself.
Currently, a civil servant is entitled to two days of paternity leave, and some private entities with collective labor agreements (CAOs) offer arrangements for fathers during the birth of their child.
The MAN party advocates for maximum equality in employment conditions for all workers. Therefore, the MAN faction proposes a legislative amendment that grants all fathers five days of leave, both in the private and public sectors.
Kingdom
In the Kingdom of the Netherlands, there have already been various changes in this area. In the Netherlands, it's already two weeks, in Aruba, it's two days, and efforts are being made to expand it to five days.
