MAN faction calls for investigation into bullying in schools

Local | By Correspondent March 19, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The faction of the MAN party has requested an investigation in a letter to Minister of Education, Sithree van Heydoorn, following an incident at the Radulphus College (high school) last week, where a female student jumped from the school building. Member of Parliament Giselle McWilliam wants the minister to investigate what happened, as well as to look into allegations made in an anonymous letter. The letter alleges that teachers bully and intimidate students. According to the MAN faction, the situation is not limited to just the Radulphus College, but the issue of bullying in our schools is much broader and more serious.

In the letter, the faction refers to the report "Bullying and discrimination in primary and secondary education in Curaçao" from August 2022. This report from the University of Curaçao and the Foundation Fair Educational Chance shows that approximately 25 percent of children are victims of bullying, and about the same amount are bullies, according to the faction. They want to know what the minister has done with this report. The author or authors of the letter, which contains the allegations about the Radulphus College, hide behind the name Vox Discipulorum, meaning 'voice of the students.'
