WILLEMSTAD - During a large-scale inspection operation at various construction sites, authorities arrested twelve people yesterday for not being able to produce their documents. Later in the day, two of them were released, while the others still need to provide their legal documents.
Police, Labor (SOAW), BAB, immigration, and other government agencies conducted a routine inspection at the construction site of Pen Resort in Pietermaai and another project on Saturnusstraat. The multidisciplinary team checked the relevant documents and looked for foreign workers without work permits. They also ensured that labor laws benefiting workers were being followed and that necessary tax payments were made.
At the Pietermaai construction site, a supervisor was arrested. Investigations revealed that this supervisor insisted that work should not stop and that all workers should continue working from the moment the police and other officials arrived for inspection. After repeated warnings, the police decided to arrest the man for persistently protesting and obstructing the work of the police and other officials.
These inspections are crucial to ensure compliance with labor laws and the protection of workers' rights. It also emphasizes the need for legal documentation for workers at construction sites, especially in a sector known for the use of illegal labor. The construction sector faces a significant shortage of labor, but work permits for foreign workers must be obtained, and correct payment according to local laws must be adhered to.
