Local | By Correspondent January 18, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The legislation proposal addressing air quality is set for submission to Parliament, marking a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to refine environmental standards. Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas has officially confirmed the completion of the proposal, emphasizing its importance in the context of the ongoing refinery negotiations. The proposed legislation carries the promise of stricter standards, ultimately designed to fortify public health safeguards.

Scheduled for deliberation in the upcoming week, the draft legislation will take center stage during the regular Council of Ministers meeting. Prior to this, it will be presented to the Governor, and subsequently, the Parliament. The fate of the proposal rests in the hands of Parliament, where decisions on its adoption will be made.

This legislative initiative is specifically tailored to establish comprehensive standards pertaining to air quality. Noteworthy among these are focused regulations targeting substances like sulfur dioxide (SO2), fine particles, and metal particles. What sets this proposal apart is the notable stringency of these standards, surpassing the benchmarks set by previous regulations. This underscores the legislation's primary objective—to elevate air quality standards and ensure a healthier environment for the populace.
