Leaders strengthen cooperation between Curaçao and Suriname

Local | By Press release November 25, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas of Curaçao is currently in Suriname for an official visit to commemorate the 49th anniversary of Suriname’s independence. In addition to participating in the celebratory ceremony, the prime minister has a packed schedule of strategic meetings and site visits aimed at deepening bilateral collaboration between the two nations.

A delegation of Curaçaoan investors accompanying the prime minister will present innovative energy solutions to Surinamese partners. The agenda also includes a visit to Suriname’s interior, focusing on exploring opportunities in the agriculture and tourism sectors.

Prime Minister Pisas will meet with President Chandrikapersad Santokhi at the Presidential Palace to discuss shared ambitions and new avenues for collaboration in a constructive atmosphere. The meeting will also be attended by Minister Albert Ramdin of Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Cooperation (Bibis), who will emphasize the strategic importance of enhancing ties between the two countries.

Discussions will primarily center on strengthening economic cooperation. Curaçao has a growing demand for fresh agricultural products, such as fruits and vegetables, as well as wood products like doors and frames. Suriname is well-positioned to meet these needs.

According to Prime Minister Pisas, the collaboration extends beyond economic advantages. “By importing Surinamese products, we not only strengthen our tourism sector but also contribute to sustainable economic growth for both nations. It’s a partnership that delivers tangible benefits for our people,” said the prime minister.

Historical and cultural ties between Curaçao and Suriname are also being highlighted during this visit. “Our relationship is built on a shared history. Strengthening this bond lays the foundation for a future filled with new opportunities for our people,” Pisas emphasized.

Minister Ramdin sees particular potential in a strategic partnership in energy and tourism. “With Suriname’s natural resources and unique eco-tourism appeal, combined with Curaçao’s expertise in the hospitality sector, we can position the region as a diverse and attractive international destination,” Ramdin stated.

The prime minister’s visit marks an important step in bolstering cooperation between Curaçao and Suriname, with a focus on sustainable growth and improving living standards for both populations.
