WILLEMSTAD – The management of the LAMAN project in Jan Thiel has confirmed that mangroves have been removed and gravel temporarily placed into the sea. This was confirmed in an interview with news site Nu.cw. According to the management, these actions were temporary measures taken within legal frameworks.
“Some mangroves were removed with the appropriate permits and in consultation with environmental experts,” said the organization. “Additionally, a temporary work platform made of gravel and stones has been constructed, which will be removed once the work is completed.”
The LAMAN project, which includes luxury apartments, villas, and over-water bungalows, is located in an area with natural vegetation. The developers emphasize that sustainability and ecological restoration are central to their plans. “We will replant more mangroves than we have removed,” the management states. They also plan to purify the water once the project is finished.
Local residents have expressed concerns about potential deforestation, noise pollution, and a lack of transparency. The developers point to previous community meetings in 2023 and claim measures have been taken, such as additional parking spaces and adjusted building heights, to minimize disruptions. The management attributes the unrest to “incorrect information or misinterpretation.”
