WILLEMSTAD – The redevelopment project for Playa Lagun remains shrouded in mystery. Recent news that construction will soon begin under a new plan has sparked renewed concerns over a lack of transparency from the government.
Heritage foundation Fundashon Pro Monumento has formally requested public access to the building permits and development plans. However, according to spokesperson Dennis Klaus, no such access has been granted so far.
Local residents have also expressed frustration over being kept in the dark. “People are unhappy with the secrecy,” the newspaper reports, pointing out that the community has not been adequately informed or consulted on the new plans.
In 2024, the original proposal for new construction on the beach caused a public outcry. Many felt the development did not fit with the charm and character of the picturesque beach. In response, the government announced it would create a new plan—but details have been scarce ever since.
Despite the ongoing lack of clarity, it was recently revealed that construction work under the revised plan is set to begin soon.
Critics say the government has failed to engage with stakeholders and residents in a meaningful way. As the start of construction approaches, calls for transparency are growing louder.
