Kingdom Relations reined in: International treaties fall under Foreign Affairs

Local | By Correspondent October 16, 2023

THE HAGUE - The Directorate of Kingdom Relations (BZK) must now leave the negotiations with Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten on international treaties to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This means that a separate process initiated by the Ministry of BZK is being transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"After discussions with the State Secretary and the Countries, it has been decided to integrate the two initiatives. All seven human rights treaties from the BZK process will be transferred to the Foreign Affairs process," Minister Hanke Bruins Slot announced to the Dutch Parliament today.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs regularly maintains contact with the Foreign Relations Directorates (DBBs) of the Countries for all international treaties, contributes to the communication between the DBBs and the relevant policy directorates in the Countries, and facilitates communication between the Countries and the ministerial departments in The Hague. BZK will still be indirectly involved in the implementation in the Countries.
